Homework Policy

BONNINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL HOMEWORK POLICY

Our aim, in giving our pupils homework, is to encourage good habits that will set good standards and prepare our pupils for the future.

Staff, pupils and parents agree that homework will:

* foster good habits
* reinforce work done in school
* encourage independent learning
* encourage investigative skills
* keep parents in touch with their children?s education
* create a link between school and home.

CONTENT OF HOMEWORK.
Work at home should not be new, but should provide a balance between reinforcing school work and research assignments.

* P1, P2 : Regular reading practice, with additional, homework
assignments at the discretion of the class teacher.
* P3 : Regular reading practice and other assignments which
will include spelling, number work, language work
and work related to the class topic.

* P4, P5 : As above.
* P6, P7 : As above and also independent research work.
Regular homework is defined as Monday to Thursday with reading given out at weekends where appropriate.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOUR CHILD SPEND ON HOMEWORK?
Please note that every child is different and, for some, it may take slightly longer or less time to complete homework.
As a guide, homework should take on a nightly basis, no longer than:

* P1, P2 - 10- 15 minutes.
* P3 - 15 minutes, building up to 20 minutes in the third
term.
* P4, P5 - 20 minutes

Primary 6 and 7 class teachers may choose to give out homework on a weekly basis in preparation for High School.

GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS

WHERE SHOULD CHILDREN WORK?
* In a warm part of the house
* On a flat surface like a table or desk
* In a well lit area
* Away from distractions like television.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP?

The most important thing you can do is to take an interest in your child?s work.
Apart from trying to provide the correct time and place for homework to be done, you should:

* Cover the homework book
* Sign the homework
* Ensure your child has a schoolbag to carry books to and fro
from school
* Ask what homework is to be done and check the homework book
* Do not send your child to another room and not check them
* Avoid saying ?this is the way we used to do it?- methods have
changed!
* Contact the school if you feel there is a problem
* Above all, offer encouragement at all times.

IN SHORT, REMEMBER THE S?s!!

SEE if your child has homework
SUPERVISE the homework
SIGN the homework
SEND it back to school
